How to Survive the Company Christmas Party – Four Useful Tips

The Company Christmas Party

Sussex Christmas PartyIf you do not particularly look forward to the annual company Christmas party, there are a few tips you can implement to help you make it through the evening.  It is a funny thing how this is supposed to be a time to kick back and relax when the get-together sometimes simply ends up being awkward for everyone.  You may want to avoid the party altogether, but because of social formalities, you find it necessary to attend.  At least you can look forward to the office Christmas party catering!

Company Christmas Party – Tip #1

Your first tip is to make a conscious decision that you will attend this event or not.  While there are different consequences whether or not you choose to attend the gathering, at least if you end up going you will be in the mindset that you made the choice to come.  After all, no one is forcing you to talk through the doors of the party venue and eat the office catering.  In the end, it is your choice to attend or not.

Company Christmas Party – Tip #2

Make sure you have a clear understanding of who is invited to the event.  Is this a party just for employees, or is family or a date invited?  Bringing people who are not intended to be there can be very awkward, no matter how good the office catering is.  Likewise, if family is invited, it may help make the evening more bearable if you have someone you feel very comfortable with right there beside you.

Company Christmas Party – Tip #3

As you gear up to get out of the car and walk into the party, have a positive attitude!  This can change your experience of the entire evening.  After all, this party is a holiday celebration and will only last a few hours no matter how bad it is.  While you are there, make the most of whatever comes your way.  If you see someone else having a not-so-good time, make a special effort to go over and talk to them.  Maybe you can cheer each other up.

Company Christmas Party – Tip #4

If alcoholic drinks are included along with the other office catering, do not tempt yourself.  You may think a drink will help you get through the evening, but picture drinking emotionally in a room full of co-workers and your boss.  Even though you are on your own time and not being paid for your actions, you want to keep in mind that everything you say and do could come back to haunt you after the holidays when everyone returns to work.
